 Topical Clusters

A Topical Cluster is a set of courses that investigates a topic from the perspective of multiple disciplines and divisions.

  • Students must complete at least 3 courses (a minimum of 9 semester hours) from one Topical Cluster. Their choices must include one 3-hour ILS Natural Science (ILSN) course; one 3-hour ILS Social Science (ILSS) course; and 3 hours in ILS Arts (ILSA)-designated courses or a 3-hour elective. The elective course cannot have the same prefix as the courses used for the ILSN and ILSS requirements.
  • Each Cluster will be available for at least a three-year period, but not all Cluster courses will be offered each semester. After three years, the same Cluster may or may not be offered again. As a general rule, students should complete their Cluster requirements by the end of their Junior year. For more information about Clusters, please visit UNC Asheville -- Integrative Liberal Studies Cluster Information.
  • Many courses satisfying Cluster requirements are section specific, meaning students must select the appropriate course section and instructor as listed within the Cluster in order for the course to fulfill the Cluster requirement.
  • Students completing the 44-hour core requirements as outlined in the NC Community College Transfer Articulation Agreement are not required to complete a topical Cluster.
  • Transferred courses equated to courses in a Cluster may be used to fulfill that Cluster requirement. Students must complete the remaining requirements within the same Cluster.

Intensives

  • Students transferring the equivalent of LANG 120 will receive credit for one Information Literacy Intensive.
  • Students transferring in two Math courses or one Math course and one Computer Science course totaling at least 6 semester hours will receive credit for the Quantitative Intensive requirement.
  • Students must petition to have other transferred courses count as Intensive requirements. A course syllabus must accompany the petition. ILS Intensive Petition Form
